UNIT 1 - Non-Representational Self-Portait
Using insights about themselves as a jumping off point students create artworks about topics and issues close to them. They begin to use their personal stories as inspiration for their artwork and create work that is personally meaningful. They are encouraged to think outside the box and move away from traditional portraiture to promote more conceptual thinking. No faces allowed!

UNIT 2 - Perspective
Students begin this unit by bringing in any object that they like and considering it from different perspectives including physical, formal, conceptual, contextual and symbolic. This is the seed that leads to the development of their ideas.

UNIT 3 - Looking at the World Critically
Students are introduced to artist's who look at the world critically and are encouraged to consider issue they are passionate about.

UNIT 4 - Foundational Drawing
In this unit students are introduced to the basics of drawing. We start of the unit with blind drawing to help us look more carefully at the world around us and exercising our observational skills. Other types of drawing introduced in this unit: grid drawing, contour drawing, pencil shading, life drawing, charcoal drawing and a few more.

UNIT 5 - Home
Students return home for the winter break and explore ideas surrounding self-identity and their feelings and ideas about the concept of home.

UNIT 5 - Super-Ordinary
Students create an artwork inspired by the concept of "super-ordinary." They create mind-maps and explore the theme through writing and imagery until they arrive at their final project. They are introduced to some extraordinary artists as well as artists who deal the the mundane in life and turn it into art.

UNIT 6 - Comparative Study
Students are introduced to the different elements of the comparative study and work in groups to discuss and analyze certain artworks. They practice identifying formal elements and compare techniques, themes and mediums used by different artists. They then chose the final artworks that they want to include in their study that preferably have natural connections and come from varying cultural backgrounds.
