Ai WeiWei is a Chinese contemporary artist and activist born on 28th August, 1957 in Beijing; he contributes in a variety of mediums, including "Sculpture", "Installation", "Architecture", "Curating", "Photography", "Videography", and etc. Ai WeiWei has experience as the artistic consultant on the Beijing National Stadium, affiliating with "Herzog & de Meuron", Swiss architectural firm during the 2008 Summer Olympics. One of his most well-known and controversial artworks is "Study of Perspective Tiananmen Square" made in 1995. It is an photography of his middle finger sticking towards the Tiananmen gate; it is a criticism of the contradiction on the brutal massacre in 1989 occured at the Tiananmen gate and the general recognition of the gate as the "Gate of Heavenly peace".
The major themes his artworks imply are often related to human rights and democracy in Chinese Government. In fact, Ai WeiWei has investigated on "Sinchuan schools corruption scandal"and its coverups and ramifications influenced from the government. Not only the contemporary artwork, but as well as the other artworks of Ai WeiWei examines the topic through various perspectives and directly delivers the message of the artwork to the audiences. Hence, the artist depicts social and political issues through his capability in range of mediums as his predominant theme of the artworks.
