Francesca Woodman(1958-1981) is an American photographer best known for her black-and-white photographic self portraits. Despite she ended her life with suicide at the age of 22, she produced over 800 untitled images during her life. In her artworks, she is often naked and seen half hidden by furniture or slow exposures that blur her figure. Influenced by surrealism, her artworks show use of many surrealist motifs, including mirrors, gloves, bowls and birds.
Taken in black and white, Space2: Woodman is standing naked and merging with the wall by covering parts of herself with the wallpaper. The art historian has suggested that this work may have been inspired by a Victorian novel called 'The Yellow Wallpaper' in which a woman is confined to a room by her husband. This artwork shows the idea of silencing and hiding women in oppressed settings.
