Mark Rothko

By: MYP4 Jarry

Mark Rothko was born on September 25, 1903, in Dvinsk, Russia. Rothko attended to Yale University, New Haven, on a scholarship from 1921 to 1923. He left Yale prematurely and moved to New York. In the early 1940s, he worked closely with Gottlieb, developing a painting style with mythological content, simple flat shapes, and imagery inspired by so-called primitive art. By mid-decade his work incorporated Surrealist techniques and images. Peggy Guggenheim gave Rothko a solo show at Art of This Century, New York. However, 1945 and Rothko committed suicide on February 25, 1970, in his New York studio.

His art style was abstract gamut painting style and the idea shown in his artworks was purely to express the most basic human feelings, like tragedy, ecstasy, bad luck, etc. This is why his artwork is just a simple color block; however, these colors were obtained after his numerous experiments and adjustments. For example, this “No.6: Violet, Green and Red” is his one of the most famous artworks, auctioned for $1.97 million. Its pigments are diluted and translucent, which makes it possible for the viewers to see a different tone color underneath it. This symbolizes the state of existence of all things and the way in which people's feelings behave. Just like the pale purple, green and red in this artwork, they show the pure emotions of human beings; the doubt, firm, and fulfill.
